Lino and Woodblock Printing

Lino cutting and printing or Woodblock printing, is a technique used for printing text, images, or patterns, widely practiced throughout East Asia and originating in China before 220 AD. Initially employed for printing on textiles, it later transitioned to paper. The process involves carving a wooden block so that only certain areas and lines remain raised; these raised sections are inked to create the print in a relief printing method. While carving the blocks requires skill and labor, this technique allows for a large number of impressions to be printed from each block.

Kaketio: Kaketio mi ta i Kaketio mi ta keda.

This artwork is inspired by the Arawak
Indian head sculptures found on the homes
in North Salina, Bonaire – homes that still
house the bloodline of the Arawak Indians.
The Arawakan or Caquetío language is termed
a “ghost” language because virtually no trace
of it survives. Only the name remains,
This  art piece is hand-printed using the lino print
technique, I also incorporated the Kaketio
spelling “Bonay,” which translates to
“low land,” reflecting the rich cultural
heritage and connection to the land of the Arawak people.
The symbols originate from the cave Indian paintings, creations
attributed from the Simacan, known as “the star watcher.”

Calypso

Calypso embodies a mesmerizing blend of sensuality and strength, transcending the traditional image of a mermaid. She navigates the delicate boundary between the realms of land and sea, a guardian of the ocean’s mysteries. With her enchanting allure, she calls to those who see the ocean merely as a resource, ready to captivate them with a bewitching gulp. Calypso is a reminder that the depths of the ocean hold not just beauty but also wisdom, urging us to respect and cherish this boundless world that sustains life. In her presence, the line between desire and responsibility blurs, inviting us to explore the depths of both the ocean and our understanding of its value.

TrumpetFish (Aulostomus maculatus)

The fact that trumpetfish are not considered endangered raises interesting reflections on the broader context of animal conservation. It feels unreal having to read about different fish species and simultaneously be reminded of the status of that species.
This creates an impression that non-endangered somehow places a species in a safer category, as if it doesn’t require the same level of attention and care. However, all species, whether endangered or not, play essential roles in the ecosystems and deserve protection.

“Shifting Baseline” reveals that what we admire as grand and beautiful today was actually much more significant and rich a few decades ago. Some have witnessed these changes, but we didn’t realize the importance of documenting the past, making it hard to demonstrate these shifts to the next generation.

“This lino print captures the image of a Porcupine fish, an ancient genus dating back 100 million years. It carries two generations of shadows , highlighting an unsettling shift in our understanding of what is perceived as ‘normal.’The darker ocean blue color I’ve chosen imparts a sense of foreboding, capturing the essence of the fish as it hangs with its head positioned vertically downwards. This posture, along with the emotional weight, emphasizes the urgent need to recognize and address the dangers accompanying our shifting baseline.

Her emotions are filled with visions of vibrant underwater ecosystems threatened by industrial fishing practices. These two fish represent not only the beauty of marine life but also the urgent need to protect our oceans and their inhabitants.

There is no such thing as sustainable fishing practice, the woman’s relationship with these fish transcends mere companionship. It symbolizes her unwavering support for the welfare of all aquatic beings. The slogan “Stop All Industrial Fishing” echoes loud and clear in her message.  A Blend of  history of Willemstoren lighthouse with a spiritual reminder that we possess the inner strength to navigate our own paths.

I am pleased to introduce to you my symbol of the frog, which represents my LinoCrafted and woodblock printing. In many cultures, frogs symbolize transformation and rebirth, reflecting their life cycle. In the context of the Arawak Indians, this symbol originates from their deep connection to nature and highlights the significance of water in their agriculture and spirituality. Overall, the frog serves as a positive emblem of life and the cyclical nature of existence, and it will be featured on all my new works.
